Economis Mini-Lesson: Jesse’s Ice Cream Stand Skit
|
Script for the Jesse’s Ice Cream Stand Skit
(Adapted from http://www.richkidsmartkid.com/education/pdf/JessesIceCreamStandK-2.pdf)
Characters:
Jesse
Toki (friend of Jesse’s)
Setting:
Jesse is just putting the finishing touches on his new ice cream stand when his good friend Toki stops by.
Toki Wow, Jesse, what a cool ice cream stand.
Jesse Thanks, Toki. I thought I would try to sell ice cream to make some extra money.
Toki Jesse, you’ve always got the best business ideas. How much does a scoop of ice
cream cost?
Jesse Well, I’m trying to figure that out because I really don’t know what to charge. Toki, you’re good with numbers. What do you think I should charge?
Toki Well, Jesse, your price needs to be high enough so you will make a profit.
Jesse Profit, huh? I think that I’ve maybe heard that word somewhere. How do I know if I am making a profit?
Toki You can only make a profit if the money you make from selling your ice cream is more than the money you paid for the ice cream.
Jesse So, like if the ice cream cost me 5 cents for each scoop then I’d make a profit if I charged my customers about 10 cents for each scoop, right?
Toki Yes, if your cost was only 5 cents per scoop and your income was 10 cents a scoop, then you’d be making a 5 cent profit on every scoop. But I bet this ice cream cost you more than 5 cents a scoop.
Jesse Well, this container of ice cream cost me $5.
Toki $5, huh? What size will the ice cream cones be?
Jesse (Showing the 3 different sized scoops, and for each one, holding up the matching sign.) Well, I have enough ice cream to make 20 small scoops – and I thought I could sell those for 25 cents each. I have enough for 15 cones if I use the medium scoop, and I thought maybe I’d charge 40 cents. Or I could just sell large-sized cones for 70 cents each. I have enough ice cream to make 10 large cones.
Toki Well, I know which size I’d sell to make the biggest profit.
Now both characters should freeze.
[Leader – ask students at this point which size scoop will produce the greatest profit. Once kids have guessed correctly, return to the skit]
Jesse Hmmmm… Let’s see, I guess the large scoop will be the best because I’ll make a total of $7 if I sell all ten cones.
Toki Yep, that’s right. And that would mean a $2 profit for you! You’re going to start making some good money – and you’ll be learning about business, too.
Jesse You’re right, Toki. And maybe some day I’ll own lots of ice cream stands!
Toki You know what, Jesse, I believe you.
Jesse Some day…. But for now, do you want to be my first customer?
Toki You bet. I’d like one large ice cream cone.
Jesse Ok, that will be 70 cents for my finest Moola Berry Ice Cream.
