Urban Concern, a church-based outreach to inner-city Columbus, Ohio, has been operating The Job Club for several years. The purpose of this summer program for students aged 12 and 13 is “to foster the career readiness and economic independence of urban youth by providing training in economic literacy, basic job skills, community service opportunities and work experience.” Urban Concern used to start its employment programs with high school students. But quickly staff learned that helping kids get jobs was just part of the issue. Students needed skills to retain those jobs and to manage their earnings. So, Urban Concern decided to start younger, exposing middle-school students to basic job readiness skills and giving them hands-on work experience through The Job Club. This program manual from Urban Concern offers a comprehensive “how to” guide for operating the seven-week summer Job Club. It describes in detail the classroom and work experience components of the program and provides lesson plans and forms used in operating the program. |
